Decades of experience & commitment to excellence
Years or experience
With 30 years of experience, Prof Muhtaseb’s training journey began at the UK’s leading NHS centres, including Moorfields Eye Hospital at St George’s, King’s College, and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, where he specialised in corneal surgery, uveitis, inflammatory eye diseases, and neuro-ophthalmology. He further honed his skills in laser refractive surgery on the Greek island of Crete, a pivotal location in the development of modern Lasik. Upon returning to the UK, Prof Muhtaseb has dedicated himself to providing top-tier patient care, mentoring junior doctors, engaging in clinical research, and enhancing optometric education.
Cataract operations
Prof Muhtaseb is renowned for his contributions to modern cataract surgery, enhancing surgical safety and quality. Specializing in micro-incision surgery, he ensures patients experience rapid recovery and return to their active lives quickly. Early in his career, he developed a pioneering risk stratification system for cataract surgery, still in use today. This system offers personalised patient advice, optimises surgical planning based on case complexity, and allows surgeons to benchmark their performance for improved outcomes.
Patient-centred care
Every step of your journey with Prof Muhtaseb, from initial consultation to post-operative care, is focused on ensuring the best outcomes and experience for you. It begins with a detailed assessment to understand your needs and options, leading to a customised surgical plan executed at your convenience. Prof Muhtaseb works closely with your optometrist to provide comprehensive care until you’re fully recovered, with ongoing availability for any further consultations needed.
Meet The Professor
Each patient is unique, and each consultation is equally unique. We listen to your story and your requirements so that we can produce the result that you want after surgery. For some people, this means not wearing glasses at all after surgery. For others, it is simply to be able to drive. In some cases, the objective is to overcome the anxiety of having surgery in their only seeing eye, while other patients may have the complexities of previous eye surgery and require specific expertise to achieve optimal outcomes. Whatever your own unique background and journey, Prof Muhtaseb brings a wealth of experience, expertise and empathy to each patient’s individualised treatment.
“I can’t speak highly enough of (Prof Muhtaseb). Nothing was too much trouble, you could phone anytime, day or night.
Why choose Prof Mohammed Muhtaseb?
A meticulous and tailored approach with every patient
Prof Mohammed Muhtaseb is a highly-skilled surgeon and a globally recognised expert in the field.
Every one of his patients receives world-class treatment, delivered using state-of-the-art technology and techniques. His ethos is to provide the very best care to his patients, tailored to each patient’s unique requirements.
Unparalleled surgical expertise
Prof Muhtaseb receives referrals for challenging and complex cases from other ophthalmic surgical consultants – a testament to the high regard in which his colleagues hold him. He treats the parents and relatives of optometrists in South Wales, as well as medical professionals in other specialties – a reflection of how his results and reputation speak for themselves. He is dedicated to helping his patients even in the most difficult of cases.
A safe surgery pioneer
Prof Muhtaseb made a major contribution to improving the safety of cataract surgery when he developed and published the first peer-reviewed cataract risk stratification system in 2004. This system enables personalised risk assessments and individualised surgical plans. Widely used globally, this system aids surgeons in mitigating surgical risks and supports ongoing research in the field. He also developed the CLEARlog software to enable surgeons to track their cataract surgery quality and safety data, as well as visual results, freedom from glasses and patient satisfaction. The data can then be used to drive improvements in care and high rates of patient satisfaction.
Teacher and researcher with international reputation
Prof Muhtaseb teaches junior surgeons on their journey to becoming independent consultants and many of his previous trainees are now consultants all over the UK and overseas. He also provides education and support to optometrists which in turn helps optimise the pre-operative counselling and the post-operative aftercare they provide to their patients. He also undertakes clinical research and has presented at prestigious international meetings including the ESCRS, ASCRS, AAO, UKISCRS, ARVO, and EVER.
Innovation in vision care
In 2008, Prof Muhtaseb was the first surgeon in Wales to perform corneal endothelial transplant surgery (also known as DSEK), which was featured on BBC News Wales.
He was also the first to introduce a number of lens implants to South Wales or the UK, such as the Gemetric trifocal lens implant from HOYA Surgical Optics, which provides patients with a full range of vision without glasses most of the time.
He was also the first in Wales to publish extensive clinical results on IntraCorneal Rings (INTACS SK) for keratoconus treatment.
Lower Complication Rates
Prof Muhtaseb is pleased to report a personal rate of Posterior Capsule Rupture (PCR) which is significantly lower than the national average for consultants, reflecting high standard of surgical safety in his practice.
The National Ophthalmology Database website (nodaudit.org.uk) states the following about PCR:
PCR is the most important intraoperative complication and when it occurs as defined above, there is a 6 fold increased risk of vision loss, a 40 fold increased risk of post cataract retinal detachment and an 8 fold increased risk of endophthalmitis. Although PCR as defined may occasionally be unavoidable it is generally accepted as an indicator of surgical quality.
It follows that these risks to patients are reduced by over 75% in Prof Muhtaseb’s practice compared to national benchmarks.
Superior Refractive Outcomes
Prof Muhtaseb achieves higher success rates in refractive outcomes compared to national averages, thanks to advanced surgical techniques and precise biometry calculations, enhancing patient satisfaction with their vision post-surgery.
Refractive outcomes determine the need to glasses after surgery. The better the refractive result, the less likely it is that the patient will need glasses to achieve best vision.
Dedicated to patient outcomes
Prof Muhtaseb understands the value of technology and data in driving improvements in patient care. To this end he developed CLEARlog, a software and App that is used by surgeons around to the world to track their surgical safety and quality in order to drive improvements in standard of care.
Hear from our patients
I think what I really valued in the consultation was an honest assessment of the benefits and also the risks so I went into the surgery literally with my eyes wide open about the high probability of success but also that there would be some changes to the sight I had. I have to say the surgery was very quick and pain-free. I had a little bit of discomfort during the day of the surgery but that disappeared very quickly and I was able to really have a a normal life from then on. It’s been incredibly liberating to wake up in the morning and be able to see without reaching for my glasses.
“No. 1 – My advice would be do it. No. 2 – See Mohammed if you can. I made the decision to not go down the NHS route because I wanted to see the best consultant – probably in the UK… It was absolutely worth it… because you can’t really put a price on your sight.”
“I don’t wear glasses at all now. I don’t need them. I was impressed by his professionalism, his calmness. He explained everything clearly and in layman’s language… I would say to anyone considering treatment: just do it. Don’t be afraid of it. It’s painless and it works.”
“I can’t speak highly enough of (Prof Muhtaseb). Nothing was too much trouble, you could phone anytime, day or night. I wish I had done it when I first started wearing reading glasses and just gone to Prof Muhtaseb then and got it done. I would do it all over again, but do it much faster.”
“I would definitely recommend the professor. I think his approach is perfect! If you have any anxieties at all – just check with someone who’s had the procedure done. I had no pain at all. I expected a little bit of discomfort – but no pain, that was good. It’s life-enhancing and that’s not something you can put clearly enough. I didn’t realise how green the trees were! It’s lovely!”
