One of the most common questions that patients have about cataract surgery is whether or not it is painful. The good news is that cataract surgery is not painful. Most patients report feeling very little during and after the procedure. It‘s understandable to feel apprehensive about anything related to your eyes, so here’s an outline of what you can expect when you choose Prof Muhtaseb as your cataract surgeon.
Consultation
Your cataract consultation with Prof Muhtaseb involves an open discussion about your vision goals and preferred lens types. He will give you a lot of information so it can be helpful to bring a friend or family member to your appointment. If they can’t make it there in person, they’re equally welcome to join over the phone or on a video call.
Prof Muhtaseb will then take advanced eye measurements using a quick, no-touch biometry scan, which will determine the ideal lens implant for your needs. This crucial step is best carried out by the surgeon who will perform your procedure. The measurements, along with your lifestyle needs, will enable Prof Muhtaseb to create a personalised treatment plan for optimal vision.
Please note: you will need a ride home as we will dilate your pupils and your vision might be blurry after the consultation.
On the day of your surgery
When you arrive for your surgery, our nursing staff will prepare you with routine checks and may dilate your pupil. Prof Muhtaseb will then answer any final questions and you’ll sign the consent forms. If you’re having a toric lens implant, he’ll perform an additional eye exam to ensure its correct alignment.
Pain-free surgery
To ensure your comfort, we use anaesthetic drops and a cannula to numb your eye – no needles! You may also be given a mild sedative to help you relax. Prof Muhtaseb will then carefully remove the cataract and implant your new lens. You may feel the surgeon’s fingers on your forehead, but you should not feel any pain. You will not feel or see any surgery due to the deep local anaesthetic that he routinely employs.
After the procedure
You may experience some itching or watering, which is normal and settles quickly. These symptoms are usually mild and can be managed with over-the-counter lubricating eye drops. A clear plastic shield will protect the eye and a nurse will explain how to use eye drops. You will be given a helpful booklet containing Prof Muhtaseb’s aftercare instructions and contact details for any questions, including his personal mobile phone number.
Pain management – not needed
Cataract surgery is usually not painful and the recovery period is also pain-free in most cases. Occasionally, patients may take paracetamol to ease slight discomfort on the first day.
A new lease of life
Most patients report that they are able to see clearly within a few days of their surgery.
