RESUMING CLINICS AND SURGERY POST-COVID-19

We are delighted to be back at work, performing high quality eye surgery, restoring vision and improving the quality of life of our cherished patients.

The health, safety and wellbeing of our patients is of paramount importance to us and we want you to be entirely assured that we, and the hospitals in which we treat patients, are taking every precaution to maximise your safety.

We are adopting all measures recommended by Government Departments, NHS and Public Health bodies, Royal College Guidelines, and Hospital policies. These include:

  • Pre-screening all patients before making face-to-face appointments to ensure that all patients offered appointments are negative for COVID risk factors

  • Strict pre-surgical protocols to maintain a COVID-free surgical environment in line with published GuidelinesStrict pre-surgical protocols to maintain a COVID-free surgical environment in line with published Guidelines

  • Enhanced local cleaning and hygiene measures within clinics and hospitals

  • Increased hand sanitiser availability and usage

  • Wider spacing of appointments in clinic and surgery, and restricting the number of companions with each patient, to reduce the number of people in each area at any given time

VIDEO AND TELEPHONE APPOINTMENTS

Virtual consultations, by telephone or video call, became popular during the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis, and they are here to stay!

And that’s a good thing for patients for the following reasons:

  • A detailed report from an optometrist will allow for a thorough and detailed consultation, providing you with the information you need to prepare for cataract or RLE surgery

  • Stay safe at home and minimise contact with individuals outside

  • The majority of the consultation involves speaking, and this can be done without visiting the clinic

  • Get all the information you need about your condition, the treatment options, and the benefits & risks of each option from the comfort of your home

  • If using a video call, it is possible for patients to invite relatives that may otherwise not have been able to attend the clinic to join in the consultation and ask questions. For example, a patient in South Wales recently had a video consultation that included his sister (a doctor) who lives in England

  • A clinic visit will be required later to allow measurements and an examination of the eyes before cataract or RLE surgery. You may consider any additional questions and bring these along when you visit Prof Muhtaseb in the clinic

  • Patients from all over the UK (or the world!) can have a video consultation with Prof Muhtaseb, learn about the variety of lenses on offer and the visual outcomes they produce, and ask all the questions they wish. Thereafter, if deciding to proceed with surgery, you can arrange for a visit to one of our clinics for the examination and to confirm the treatment plan, with surgery to follow soon after

  • Secure your place on the list for surgery before you even attend the clinic

  • Avoid the ever-growing backlog of cataract patients waiting for surgery

Following the video or telephone appointment, a further in-person consultation will be required for Prof Muhtaseb to complete the eye examination and finalise a management plan. This includes confirmation of the benefits and risks of surgery, and the type of lens implant that will be used.

In the meantime, stay safe, stay well, and take care of each other

With personal best wishes,

Prof Mohammed Muhtaseb
